No. I’d given it some thought but when I left school I really had no idea what I wanted to do.

Yes, although not the sort of scientist I wound up becoming! When I was very small I wanted to be a paleontologist and study dinosaurs and a bit later I wanted to be a Forensic scientist – structural biology and crystallography only came about for me when I actually started working in science – I didn’t even know they existed when I was at school!

Nope, I had no idea what I wanted to be. Many of my friends wanted to be doctors, or lawyers, scientists or teachers from a very young age, so it made me nervous not knowing.
Deciding what I wanted to be felt a bit like a race and there never seemed to be enough time to be sure about my choices. But guess what? Many people choose wrongly and that is ok too. Being willing to work hard and adapt to a new job, change if need be, will probably make you a great professional in any area. If you think you would enjoy being a scientist, you are on the right track by talking to us, asking questions 🙂

At the end of school I was applying to medicine courses at university. I didn’t get any offers but about half the universities I’d applied to sent me a letter saying have you considered biology. I accepted a place studying medical biochemistry at the University of Leicester and absolutely loved it. I couldn’t imagine choosing sticking needles in people or cutting them open over what I get to do now.

Originally I wanted to be a Vet – but you need 4 A grades at A-level, and I didn’t get that – so I chose to do Biochemistry instead and haven’t looked back!
