      I can’t say I have.

My secondary school and sixth form were awful schools which consistently failed to inspire students but I somehow made it through that. When I got to university it was plain sailing. I mean, a lot of hard work went in but I was always motivated and eager to find out more.

Other than getting the required qualifications, not really.

      It’s been fun!

Pulling my grades up was quite a challenge. I’d been offered a PhD place on the condition that I managed to bring my 2:2 up to a 2:1. I spent almost every waking hour working in the library before my final exams and on my dissertation and it all paid off in the end.

It was difficult to find a PhD grant in Portugal, and at that point I considered different types of work, some in Science some not. In the end I got funding to go do a PhD in the UK, doing crystallography that I loved, so I took that as my cue 🙂
