Well, I’ve been working on this project for 6 years – but my boss started the overall project over 15 years ago.

Figuring out complicated diseases can take a lot of time!

I’ve been working on my current project for 9 months. A lot of the stuff I started on was the work a previous student had been doing so I got off to a quick start. One thing I got into quickly was to develop a set of mutants I wanted to work on. It took me about 2 months to optimise my protocol for making the mutants and then work out what they do. Now I’m testing them all a bit more to make sure everything is as it should be. It would have been quicker if I knew which mutants I wanted to make, but I decided I wanted to make a library of thousands of random mutants!

I’ve been working at my project for almost 2 years now, by my supervisor has been working at it for 5 or 6 years I believe.

Building beamlines takes a lot of time and depends on a lot of other people delivering the parts you need.

I left University 16 years ago. I got into the type of research I am doing now, working with neutrons, 10 years ago.
