I had a bit of experience as a demonstrator while I was doing my PhD, and later as a tutor during 4 years (before I even thought about teaching).
When I was a student I remember often thinking that if I was the teacher I would do things differently, I was very critic of some teachers and worshiped others. So I guess in a way I always pictured myself teaching. but what made it more striking was the contrast to Science, where the reward of your work and the importance of the results can take a long time to grasp. When I was teaching I felt that when I helped even just one student learn something new, the reward was immediate.
