The facial hair of some ‘older’ scientists 🙂

The most interesting thing in my own work currently… I can’t publish on here because we haven’t published it in a journal yet.

The most interesting thing in the world of science currently? Targeted genome editing using things like zinc finger nucleases, TAL effectors and CRISPR/Cas-based systems. These are techniques for editing a plant or animals genomes, just in the same way that you could open up Microsoft Word and edit an essay!

I have a telescope and watch a lot of Astronomy shows – so something astronomical – probably the mysterious hexagon cloud formation at Saturn’s north pole.

The one that impressed me the most was the blue light coming from the nuclear reactor pool when I looked down on it. It is called Cherenkov radiation and it is caused by charged particles moving in the water at faster speeds than light would. Some people call it the sonic boom for light, except here there is no noise, just a pretty glow!
