It came to me. I had never heard of crystallography until I went to do an Erasmus training abroad, and the project that I worked on involved determining the structures of relatively small molecules. That is where I first started looking at crystals and thinking about them more carefully.
Later after I finished my undergraduate studies I saw an internship announcement in protein crystallography, to work at one of my favourite places in the world (my home town in Portugal!). I wanted to travel the world a bit more but I realised I was hooked, I wanted to learn more about it so I stayed there for nearly 2 years.
