Attractiveness is linked to how healthy a person is. Things like a strong physique in men and the proportion of waist to hips in women are indicators of how successful they are likely to be in reproducing and raising children. As well as how healthy and vigorous the children are likely to be.

All animals select mates based on their predicted ability to provide them with good offspring.

Because as a rule of thumb, better looking people are fitter and more healthy and any children we have with them will likely have a better chance of surviving and passing down our genes to the next generation.

Conservation of the species. Subconsiously we are all looking for the strongest mate to carry on our genetic lines. Human have evolved a little bit from animals in exactly how we pick our mates though. Personality doesn’t really go a long way in the animal kingdom. They are more interested in who have the biggest brightest feathers or who can roar the loudest.
